Geelong Advertiser: ‘Tense penalty shoot-out decides Geelong hockey final’

September 14, 2009

CORIO clinched the division one men’s hockey premiership with a penalty shoot-out win over the Saints.

The Saints took the early scoreboard ascendency but Corio fought back to equalise just ahead of the final siren to force a golden goal play-off.

But the sudden death period still couldn’t split the sides, with the match finishing at three goals apiece.

Corio held its nerve and converted the final penalty to win five penalty goals to three.

Corio completed the double when it clinched the top women’s premiership four to three against Geelong.

In what was a match of two halves, Corio looked to have the match sewn up at half-time, before a late charge from Geelong almost forced overtime.

Newtown edged out South Barwon by two goals in the men’s division two grand final and trounced Geelong six to nil in the women’s second-tier playoff.

Newtown completed a sweep of the junior titles with Newtown Maroon beating Kardinia three goals to two in the under 17’s, Newtown Gold beating Kardinia again in the 15’s and Gold triumphing over Maroon in the 13’s.
