Hockey Geelong offers local primary schools the opportunity to participate in our annual program of practical hockey sessions conducted in the school during class times.
These sessions may be conducted as:
- Hockey Roadshows, with session leaders/coaches and equipment provided by Hockey Geelong at no charge to the school. These sessions are usually one off single sessions for each class requested by the school.
- Sporting Schools programs, where schools apply for government funding from the Australian Sports Commission. These programs usually involve 3 to 5 sessions for each participating class over a period of time. Equipment for use during the classes will be provided by Hockey Geelong but schools may choose to use their funding to purchase equipment for the school.
The hockey sessions are available at any time of the year to suit the school, dependent on the availability of Hockey Geelong personnel. The program allows students to experience hockey, often for the first time, and learn the basic skills and perhaps to discover that they enjoy the game.
At the conclusion of each program, the students are provided with further information about hockey and Hockey Geelong clubs, and invited to continue their participation if they wish by attending a Hookin2Hockey program or joining a training session or a team.
The 2022 year saw a huge post-covid rebound with 34 schools participating and over 6000 students participating. The 2025 year has so far included 18 schools who have hosted hockey programs, allowing nearly 3200 students to learn about hockey.
We have schools booked in for programs in Terms 3 and 4. Volunteer coaches are greatly appreciated, with a modest honourarium paid in recognition of time spent. Details of the program and the times for which volunteers are needed can be found here………
