Warm-up programs play a crucial role in reducing injury for sports people by preparing the body for physical activity. A comprehensive warm up program can reduce injury rates (including concussion) in youth and adults.
A well-designed warm-up gradually increases heart rate, blood flow, and muscle temperature, which helps improve flexibility, balance, and coordination. Including dynamic movements, sport-specific drills, and light strength or activation exercises can reduce the risk of common injuries such as muscle strains, ligament tears, and joint issues.
Regularly completing a proper warm-up also helps athletes move more efficiently and confidently, allowing them to perform at their best while staying safe on the field or court.
