Hockey Roadshows Are Coming

The Geelong Hockey Association has an active junior recruiting program based on the Hockey Victoria Roadshows program. The program provides practical hockey classes during school hours for students in local primary schools.  Having a go at hockey in this way enables children to learn some basic hockey skills and  see if this might be the sport for them.

Hockey Victoria appoint and fund a coach to lead these classes for 1 to 3 weeks of the year, generally in Term 1, with volunteer coaches from local clubs to assist.

Participating children are invited to join a Hookin2Hockey program to learn more about hockey. Hookin2Hockey programs are run by local clubs for 4 to 6 weeks, allowing participants to learn a new skill each week and to meet new friends along the way.  At the end of the program, children are encouraged to join a team and continue playing hockey.

Following the initial HV funded Roadshow program, the Geelong Hockey Association offers to conduct further classes in Terms 2, 3 and 4 at times which may better suit the school curriculum. The support provided by Viva Energy for this program in the past two years has been greatly appreciated.

2023 Roadshows and Recruiting

The 2023 program activities included visits to 27 schools during the year, with over 3300 students participating. Thanks to the seventeen coaches who led these classes during the year.

Thirty eight children participated in the six Hookin2Hockey programs  and the majority of these went on to join local clubs to play in the winter season.

2024 Roadshows Program

The 2024 program of Roadshows is about to begin, with two weeks of HV funded Roadshow classes running from February 12 to  23.  We have 13 schools booked in for programs in the next month, with at least 1200 students expected to participate.

We have expressions of interest from 11 schools for further programs and these will be followed up to arrange suitable times.

Volunteers Wanted

This great response from schools means that we are looking for volunteers to help coach the school sessions. Coaching experience is not essential, but volunteers must have a current Working with Children Check, and have received 3 COVID vaccinations.

There is some funding available for modest reimbursement for the coaches who lead the sessions.

Invitation to Hookin2Hockey

The students who participate in these hockey sessions at school will be invited to Come and Try hockey, at one of the Hookin2Hockey programs operating in the Geelong area. The first session is free to try and equipment is provided, so it’s a great way for boys and girls aged 5 to 12 to have a go at hockey!

Bring your children and invite your neighbours and family members to join one of these programs – or anyone you know!  Help us spread the word about what a great game hockey is, and let’s get more people playing hockey.

Check out our Clubs page to register for your chosen Hookin2Hockey program.
