Getting children involved in sport and keeping them involved has great benefits for the children, and for the whole of the sporting community. Having more players join our sport at the lower age levels helps to maintain participation rates and competitions as they grow.
The Geelong Hockey Association is keen to see lots of new players join our sport in 2021, and lots of past players return to the field too.
The push to recruit new players for our junior competitions begins in February with Roadshows in schools and Hookin2Hockey programs.
School Hockey Roadshows
During the week February 15 to 19 the Geelong Hockey Association is assisting Hockey Victoria with the conduct of Hockey Roadshows in local primary schools. Invitations extended by Hockey Victoria were enthusiastically received, and we will be visiting 5 local schools to provide practical hockey lessons for over 600 students. Students will have the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey and see what fun it is.
- Monday February 15 – Lara Lake Primary School
- Tuesday February 16 – St Thomas Aquinas Primary School
- Wednesday February 17 – Manifold Heights Primary School
- Thursday February 18 – Fyans Park Primary School
- Friday February 19 – Bannockburn P-12 College
Further visits are planned to other schools in the coming weeks.
Hookin2Hockey Programs
Hockey Roadshows will be followed by Come and Try and Hookin2Hockey programs.
Hookin2Hockey is an introductory program for girls & boys 10 years and under, but it can be modified to suit anyone coming to the sport for the first time. Hookin2Hockey gives boys and girls the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, develop fundamental motor skills and make friends all while beginning their lifelong love of hockey! Participants learn about the game through skill based games in a fun and safe environment.
A Hookin2Hockey program usually runs for 5 to 10 weeks, which means children can learn new skills and build confidence each week. It is a fun and safe program, where everyone is welcome. Equipment and games are modified to suit the age of the participants. Equipment is provided for use during the sessions.
