Hockey Geelong is seeking 500 new players to boost its ranks in the coming years.

The association is aiming to increase its numbers to 1200 as redevelopment of Stead Park at Corio gets underway next year.

Project 1200 was launched to the clubs last week (Tuesday 29th October 2024), with clubs gathering to share ideas about increasing junior and senior participation numbers.

Geelong Hockey Association president Mr Graeme Dent said all ideas were on the table whether it be a corporate competition day amongst local businesses, a seven-a-side mid week tournament, or family teams.

“There’s a lot of goodwill amongst the clubs to boost our numbers to pre-COVID levels,” Mr Dent said. “The redevelopment of Stead Park is a great opportunity to look at how to do things differently.”

Mr Dent said new players were always impressed with the family atmosphere of the association.

“We have lots of kids playing in the same clubs as their parents and sometimes, on the same team,” Mr Dent said. “It’s a great way for kids to make new friends outside of school.”

The launch of Project 1200 comes as a new hockey pitch is planned for Torquay in addition to the redevelopment of the Stead Park hockey complex, including a new pitch and clubrooms.

The Torquay pitch will include a state-of-the-art wet/ dry surface, lights, seating for spectators and dugouts for the teams. Torquay Hockey Club strategic development lead Andrew Crowley said the club was working closely with the Surf Coast Shire and the Victorian Government to create a new home for hockey in Torquay. He said the teams were looking forward to playing hockey games and training in Torquay by 2026.

“It will be great for Torquay, the surrounding areas and the growth suburbs of Armstrong Creek,” Mr Crowley said. “They will have a world-class hockey pitch at their doorstep.”
